Biography
Vítor Machado Ferreira (Vitinha) rose through FC Porto’s academy, made his senior debut in the reserve team, gained crucial “hardening” experience during a loan spell in the Premier League, and ultimately became a key midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain in the Luis Enrique era — reaching the pinnacle with the club’s first-ever UEFA Champions League title.
Path to Porto: Early Development and Academy Years
He began playing football at Desportivo das Aves — the club where his father previously played. He then moved to Pinheirinhos de Ringe, where he crossed paths with future national teammate Diogo Costa. Vitinha also trained within Benfica’s system but eventually joined Porto’s structure (through their partner club Padroense for one season). At youth level, he was part of the squad that won the 2018–19 UEFA Youth League.
On August 11, 2019, he made his debut for Porto B in LigaPro. In January 2020, he played his first match for the senior team, and by the end of the season he had made eight appearances and became Portuguese champion with the club.
Loan to Wolves: A Tough Football Education
In September 2020, Vitinha joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. The club had a €20 million purchase option, but it was not activated.
In England, he gained valuable experience: he debuted in the Premier League, gradually adapted to the pace of the game, and scored his only goal of the season with a powerful long-range strike (35 yards) in the FA Cup against Chorley. Vitinha spent the season in a more “physical” league and returned to Porto as a more mature footballer.
Return to Porto: Breakthrough, Titles, and Best Young Player Status
The 2021–22 season became a turning point. Initially, he often remained on the bench, but after an impressive UEFA U21 European Championship, he began receiving more minutes and quickly secured a place in the starting lineup.
Key Moments of the Season:
- First goal for Porto — December 3 against Portimonense
- Symbolic match: December 23 against Benfica in the Portuguese Cup — a goal, an assist, and Man of the Match award
- Consistent dominance in midfield after Sérgio Oliveira’s departure: Vitinha became one of the key players in pressing and ball control
He helped Porto win the domestic double (Primeira Liga + Portuguese Cup), played 47 matches that season, scored in the cup final, and received individual awards: Best Young Player of the league and a place in the Team of the Season.
Transfer to PSG: Difficult Adaptation and Transformation into a System Leader
In the summer of 2022, Vitinha transferred to Paris Saint-Germain for €41.5 million (the club activated his release clause). He debuted with a trophy: in the Trophée des Champions against Nantes, he started and completed 43 accurate passes out of 43 (100% accuracy), perfectly fitting his technical profile.
His first season in Paris was uneven: he was quickly praised for his partnership with Marco Verratti but later faced internal tensions and lost his starting place. In spring 2023, he scored his first goal for PSG — a long-range strike against Lens.
In the 2023–24 season, after the departures of Messi and Neymar, his role changed radically. Luis Enrique placed his trust in Vitinha: he became far more consistent, scored against Barcelona in both legs of the Champions League quarterfinals, helped the club secure a domestic treble, and was described by Enrique as the player of the season.
2024–25: Continental Treble and a Leap to the World Elite
Before the 2024–25 season, Vitinha became vice-captain and one of the players entrusted with penalty duties (sharing responsibilities with Dembélé).
- Champions League victory and PSG’s first-ever title in the competition
- In the final against Inter, he was involved in creating the first goal and assisted Désiré Doué for the second
- The club secured a continental treble
- At the 2025 Club World Cup, he scored PSG’s first goal of the tournament (against Atlético) and received the Silver Ball award
His individual season recognition included third place in the Ballon d’Or voting and selection in the 2025 FIFPRO World XI.
2025–26: New Heights with PSG
- Shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or and finished 3rd
- Played his 100th Ligue 1 match for PSG
- Scored his first career Champions League hat-trick (5–3 vs Tottenham)
- Won the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, converting a penalty in the shootout, and received the Player of the Tournament and Golden Ball awards
Personal Life
Vitinha’s father, Vítor Manuel, is a former professional footballer (midfielder) who played for several clubs, including Desportivo das Aves, and reached the Portuguese Cup final with Campomaiorense in 1999.
Vitinha is in a relationship with Tatiana Torres. As of 2025, the couple has two daughters.
