Biography of Vitinha
Vitor Machado Ferreira (Vitinha) progressed through the Porto academy, made his senior debut in the reserve team, went through an important "toughening" loan spell in the Premier League, and eventually became a key midfielder for Paris Saint-Germain in the Luis Enrique era - reaching the pinnacle with the club’s first-ever UEFA Champions League title.
Path to Porto: early years and academy
He started playing football at Desportivo das Aves - the club where his father had previously played. Then came a period at Pinheirinhos de Ringe, where he crossed paths with future national teammate Diogo Costa. Vitinha also trained within Benfica’s system, but eventually joined Porto’s structure (through their partner club Padroense for one season). At youth level, he was part of the team that won the 2018-19 UEFA Youth League.
On August 11, 2019, he made his debut for Porto B in LigaPro. In January 2020, he debuted for the first team and by the end of the season had made 8 appearances and became Portuguese champion with the club.
Loan to Wolves: a tough step into senior football
In September 2020, Vitinha joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. The club had a €20 million purchase option, but it was not activated.
In England, he gained valuable experience:
- made his Premier League debut
- adapted to a higher tempo
- scored his only goal with a long-range strike (35 yards) in the FA Cup against Chorley
Vitinha spent the season in a more "physical" league and returned to Porto as a more mature player.
Return to Porto: breakthrough, trophies, and best young player status
The 2021-22 season became a turning point. Initially, he was often on the bench, but after an impressive U21 EURO he began receiving more playing time and quickly secured a starting spot.
Key moments of the season:
- first goal for Porto - December 3 against Portimonense
- signature match: December 23 against Benfica in the Portuguese Cup - goal, assist, and Man of the Match award
- midfield dominance after Sergio Oliveira’s departure
He helped Porto win the domestic double (Primeira Liga + Portuguese Cup), played 47 matches that season, scored in the cup final, and received individual awards:
- league’s best young player
- included in the team of the season
Move to PSG: difficult adaptation and rise to system leader
In the summer of 2022, Vitinha joined Paris Saint-Germain for €41.5 million. He debuted with a trophy: in the Trophée des Champions against Nantes, he started and completed 43 out of 43 passes (100% accuracy).
The first season was inconsistent: early praise for his partnership with Verratti was followed by a loss of starting position. In spring 2023, he scored his first goal for PSG against Lens.
In the 2023-24 season, his role changed dramatically:
- became a key player under Luis Enrique
- scored against Barcelona in the Champions League
- helped the club win a domestic treble
2024-25: continental treble and rise to world elite
Before the season, he became vice-captain.
Season achievements:
- Champions League winner (PSG’s first title)
- assist in the final against Inter
- continental treble
- Silver Ball at the 2025 Club World Cup
Individual achievements:
- 3rd place in Ballon d’Or
- included in FIFPRO World XI 2025
2025-26: new heights with PSG
- 3rd place in Ballon d’Or
- 100 matches in Ligue 1 for PSG
- first Champions League hat-trick (vs Tottenham)
- FIFA Intercontinental Cup winner
- Player of the Tournament and Golden Ball awards
