Biography of Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in July 2022 - and almost immediately established himself as the team's main finisher. Later he signed a new agreement that keeps him at the Etihad until the summer of 2034.
Yes, the surname is familiar in Manchester: Erling is the son of Alfie Haaland, a former City player. But from that point on it is entirely his own story. Haaland arrived in England with the reputation of a striker who does not "look for chances", but turns them into goals. Strength, speed, height, heading ability, shots with both feet - he has everything. A classic centre forward in the best sense of the term. The exact "number nine" the club had been missing since the departure of Sergio Aguero.
How he got there
He was born in Leeds and moved with his family to Bryne in southern Norway at the age of three. That is where he started his football journey and made his debut in senior football in the Norwegian second division less than three months before his 16th birthday.
Next came Molde: a goal from the bench in his debut match, and he finished the 2018 season as the club's top scorer (12 goals in 25 league matches) - all at the age of 18.
Red Bull Salzburg (from January 2019) became the real launchpad: at the start of the 2019/20 season he produced 17 goals in 9 matches, including three hat-tricks and a Champions League debut hat-trick against Genk.
Dortmund simply continued the momentum: in 2.5 seasons with the Black and Yellows he scored 86 goals in 89 matches, won the German Cup and received the Bundesliga Player of the Season award in 2020/21. In the Champions League he also kept setting records for speed and scoring efficiency.
Haaland scores heavily for Norway as well: he made his debut in September 2019, later recorded his first hat-trick and won the Golden Boot of the 2020/21 Nations League.
At City he immediately began collecting not only goals but also trophies: already in his debut season he set the club record for Premier League goals, scored five goals in one Champions League match against RB Leipzig, and then came the treble - the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. In 2023/24 he added the UEFA Super Cup and won his second consecutive Premier League Golden Boot (27 goals; 38 in all competitions). Even in the more difficult 2024/25 season Haaland maintained his level - 34 goals in 48 matches.
Personal life of Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland grew up in a sporting family. His father is Alfie Haaland, a former Norway international and Manchester City player. His mother is Gry Marita Braut, a former athlete who competed in the women's heptathlon.
Haaland has often said that his roots are important to him. In an interview with the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten in 2017 he admitted that his dream was to win the Premier League with Leeds - the city where he was born.
Sport is a family tradition: his cousins Jonatan Braut Brunes and Albert Tjaland also became professional footballers.
In everyday life Erling is known for a rather calm approach to life: he practices meditation - and apparently that is how he keeps a cool head even during the most intense weeks of the season.
There is also an unexpected detail from his youth. In 2016 Haaland, together with Norway U-17 teammates Erik Botheim and Erik Tobias Sandberg, released a track called "Kygo jo". They recorded it under the name Flow Kingz, and the video on YouTube has gathered more than 14 million views.
In autumn 2024 Haaland announced on social media that he and his girlfriend Isabel Haugseng Johansen were expecting their first child. In December the couple welcomed a son.

Erling Haaland scandals
Erling Haaland is generally considered one of the least controversial footballers of his generation, although several episodes in his career have still attracted significant media attention. The most notable discussions were related to his behavior on the pitch and his goal celebrations.
During his time at Borussia Dortmund, Haaland occasionally reacted emotionally to provocations from opponents and controversial refereeing decisions, which sometimes led to heated exchanges after matches. However, these situations rarely escalated beyond verbal disputes and were generally seen as the competitive temperament of a striker.
Another topic occasionally discussed in the media concerns his expressive celebrations after important goals, which some opponents perceived as provocative. Despite this, Haaland has largely maintained a professional reputation and has avoided major scandals or disciplinary controversies throughout his career.
