BIOGRAPHY
Trent John Alexander-Arnold is an English footballer capable of playing at right-back and in central midfield. He has become one of the most productive and creative defenders of his generation thanks to his long-range passing, crossing ability, and set-piece execution. In 2025, after a long career at Liverpool, he moved to Real Madrid.
Early Years and Liverpool Academy
Trent was born in the West Derby area of Liverpool. At the age of six, he joined a Liverpool half-term camp through his school — his name was literally drawn out of a hat. There, he was noticed by an academy coach and soon became part of the club’s system.
In the academy, he played in various positions but eventually changed his role: from a wide midfielder to a right-back — the most direct path to the first team. In youth teams, he wore the captain’s armband and was considered one of the leaders of his generation.
First-Team Breakthrough and First Major European Season
His official debut for Liverpool took place on 25 October 2016 in the League Cup against Tottenham. Already in his first season, he earned trust, was named the club’s Young Player of the Year, and established himself as part of the main squad rotation.
In the 2017–18 season, he got his chance due to an injury to the starting right-back. Trent seized it quickly: he scored a free-kick in the Champions League and reached the tournament final, becoming the youngest Liverpool player to start a Champions League final.
Peak at Liverpool: Champions League, Premier League Title, and Assist Records
The 2018–19 season turned him into a global star: he became a key creative force on the right flank, set the Premier League record for assists in a season by a defender, and played a crucial role in the legendary comeback against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final — it was his “quick corner” that became the decisive moment of the tie. Liverpool then won the Champions League.
In 2019, he added two more trophies: the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup. In the 2019–20 season, Trent won the Premier League and helped Liverpool end a 30-year wait for the league title. That season cemented his status as a generational leader and brought him individual awards as Young Player of the Year (including PFA and Premier League honors).
In 2021–22, he won a domestic cup double — the FA Cup and the League Cup. By that point, his role in the team had long gone beyond that of a traditional full-back: he had become one of the team’s main creative playmakers.
Evolution of Role: “Inverted” Defender and Midfielder
In the 2022–23 season, Jürgen Klopp changed his tactical role: Trent began moving inside during possession phases and operating closer to central midfield, alongside the defensive midfielder. This was part of Liverpool’s structural rebuild and became one of the team’s main tactical trends.
In 2023–24, he became Liverpool’s vice-captain, and in the 2024–25 season, he won his second Premier League title of the modern era format with the club. In spring 2025, he announced he would leave the club, ending a 20-year association with Liverpool.
Transfer to Real Madrid
On 30 May 2025, Real Madrid announced the signing of Alexander-Arnold on a six-year contract. To complete the transfer before the expiration of his Liverpool deal and register him for the Club World Cup, the Madrid club paid compensation. At Real Madrid, he received the number 12 shirt and changed the name on his jersey: instead of Alexander-Arnold — simply Trent, to make it easier for the Spanish audience.
He made his debut for the Madrid club at the Club World Cup in summer 2025 and played his first La Liga match in August.
England National Team
Trent made his England debut in 2018 and played at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups. At Euro 2024, he was listed as a midfielder and was used centrally alongside Declan Rice, as well as coming off the bench. In the quarter-final against Switzerland, he scored the decisive penalty in the shootout.
PERSONAL LIFE
A virtuoso of set-pieces and one of the most intellectually gifted players in his position, Trent is known off the pitch for his calm lifestyle and broad range of interests.
His older brother Tyler acts as his agent. He also has a younger brother, Marcel. Through his family, Trent has Scottish and American roots, which in the past gave him eligibility to represent the United States before making his England debut.
He is passionate about chess: his father taught him as a child, and later Trent played an exhibition match against Magnus Carlsen, saying that chess helps him “think two or three moves ahead.”
Among his close friends is Jude Bellingham — his teammate in the national team and now also at Real Madrid.
