Biography
Omar Khaled Mohamed Abdel Salam Marmoush is an Egyptian forward who plays for Manchester City and the Egypt national team. His career is a long European journey without a “fast track”: first Egypt, then Germany with loan spells, followed by a breakthrough in Frankfurt, and only after that — a move to a top Premier League club.
Wadi Degla: The Start in Egypt
Marmoush made his professional debut in the Egyptian Premier League on July 8, 2016, coming off the bench in a match against Al-Ittihad Alexandria, which ended in a 3–2 victory. He made 16 appearances and scored 2 goals for Wadi Degla — enough to attract attention from Europe.
In 2017, he joined the VfL Wolfsburg system, starting with the reserve team.
VfL Wolfsburg: First Steps in the Bundesliga and Loan Spells
Marmoush made his debut for Wolfsburg’s first team on May 26, 2020, in a Bundesliga win against Bayer (4–1). Soon after, he signed his first professional contract and, in August 2020, made his European competition debut in the Europa League against Shakhtar.
Loan spells followed — a crucial stage in his development:
St. Pauli (2021)
21 matches and 7 goals.
VfB Stuttgart (2021–22)
A bright start with a goal at the end of his debut match against Eintracht. In September 2021, he was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Month, repeating the achievement in March 2022. There was also a notable episode against Wolfsburg: an assist and an unsuccessful Panenka penalty attempt that hit the crossbar.
After returning to Wolfsburg, he began to show consistency: scoring in the German Cup, netting his first Bundesliga goal for the club, and completing a full season (36 matches, 6 goals, 1 assist).
Eintracht Frankfurt: The Breakthrough That Made Him “Expensive”
In the summer of 2023, Marmoush joined Eintracht Frankfurt as a free agent and took the number 7 shirt. This became a turning point.
In the 2023–24 season he:
- scored in the German Cup and in the Bundesliga,
- netted his first European goal for the club from the penalty spot,
- finished the season with 16 goals in 37 matches.
At the same time, he began delivering in “big” matches: a brace in a 3–3 draw against Borussia Dortmund and a goal in a 5–1 win over Bayern. With 12 league goals, he became the third-highest scoring African in Bundesliga history at that time. The culmination was a crucial penalty conversion against Leipzig, which helped Eintracht qualify for European competitions.
The 2024–25 season elevated him even further. In September, he recorded 6 goals and 3 assists and received the Bundesliga Player of the Month award, briefly surpassing Harry Kane in the scoring race. In the Europa League, he added important goals and stood out especially for his set pieces — in November, he scored three consecutive free kicks. He closed the first half of the season with 15 goals, becoming the league’s second top scorer behind Kane and breaking Eintracht’s club record for goals in the Hinrunde (previously held by Theofanis Gekas).
Manchester City: A Move to the Top and Immediate Impact
On January 23, 2025, Manchester City announced the signing of Marmoush on a 4.5-year contract. The reported fee was around £59 million.
His Premier League debut came on January 25 (a 3–1 win over Chelsea). On February 15, Marmoush scored the first hat-trick of his career — a 4–0 victory over Newcastle.
In the FA Cup, he scored the winning goal in the quarterfinal against Bournemouth, sending City into a seventh consecutive semifinal. Later, in the final, he missed a penalty, but the season was still remembered for his most important goal: on May 20, he scored a long-range strike into the top corner (via the post) against Bournemouth, and on May 31, the goal was named Premier League Goal of the Season.
In the 2025–26 season, he opened his account in the League Cup against Swansea, and after returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, he scored his first Premier League goal of the season against Wolverhampton and netted a brace in the second leg of the League Cup semifinal against Newcastle.
Personal Life
Marmoush was born into an Egyptian family who lived in Canada for some time, which allowed him to obtain dual citizenship — Egyptian and Canadian. The family later returned to Cairo, where he grew up and began playing football at the Wadi Degla academy.
He grew up in Maadi — a relatively quiet part of Cairo — where he received his basic education while developing his football skills. Despite later moving to Europe, Marmoush maintains close ties with his family and regularly emphasizes the importance of parental support in his career.
Marmoush is a practicing Muslim. After scoring goals, he often performs sujood (prostration) — a religious gesture of gratitude. This element has become a recognizable part of his image and highlights his spiritual discipline.
He is not prone to scandals, provocative statements, or flamboyance. In interviews, he appears calm, reserved, and thoughtful. Even after his high-profile move to Manchester City, he did not change his behavior — minimal loud statements, maximum focus on the game.
Marmoush does not publicize romantic relationships and rarely posts personal photos outside of football contexts. The main content of his social media consists of matches, training sessions, national team duties, and occasional family moments.
