Biography of Omar Marmoush
Omar Khaled Mohamed Abdel Salam Marmoush is an Egyptian forward who plays for Manchester City and the Egypt national team. His career represents a long European journey without a “fast elevator”: first Egypt, then Germany with loan spells, followed by a breakthrough in Frankfurt and only after that - a move to a top Premier League club.
Wadi Degla: start in Egypt
Marmoush made his professional debut in the Egyptian Premier League on July 8, 2016. He came on as a substitute in a match against Al-Ittihad Alexandria that ended with a 3:2 victory. For Wadi Degla he played 16 matches and scored 2 goals - enough to attract attention from European clubs.
In 2017 he joined the system of Wolfsburg, starting with the reserve team.
VfL Wolfsburg: first steps in the Bundesliga and loan spells
Marmoush made his debut for the Wolfsburg first team on May 26, 2020 in a Bundesliga victory against Bayer Leverkusen (4:1). Shortly after, he signed his first professional contract and in August 2020 made his European debut in the Europa League against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Then came the loan spells - an important stage of development:
- St. Pauli (2021) - 21 matches and 7 goals.
- VfB Stuttgart (2021-22) - a bright start with a goal at the end of his debut match against Eintracht Frankfurt. In September 2021 he was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Month and repeated the achievement in March 2022. There was also a notable episode against Wolfsburg: an assist and an unsuccessful Panenka penalty attempt that hit the crossbar.
After returning to Wolfsburg he began to gain stability: scoring in the German Cup, netting his first Bundesliga goal for the club and completing a full season (36 matches, 6 goals, 1 assist).
Eintracht Frankfurt: the breakthrough that made him “expensive”
In the summer of 2023 Marmoush joined Eintracht Frankfurt as a free agent and took the number 7 shirt. This became a turning point in his career.
During the 2023-24 season he:
- scored in the German Cup and the Bundesliga;
- scored his first European goal for the club from the penalty spot;
- finished the season with 16 goals in 37 matches.
At the same time he started producing big performances: a brace in a 3:3 match against Borussia Dortmund and a goal in a 5:1 victory over Bayern Munich. By the end of the season, with 12 league goals, he became the third most prolific African scorer in Bundesliga history at that moment. The culmination was a crucial penalty conversion against RB Leipzig that helped Eintracht qualify for European competitions.
The 2024-25 season lifted him even higher. In September he scored 6 goals and provided 3 assists, earning the Bundesliga Player of the Month award and briefly surpassing Harry Kane in the top scorer race. In the Europa League he added important goals and especially stood out for his set pieces - in November he scored three consecutive direct free kicks. He finished the first half of the season with 15 goals, becoming the league’s second top scorer behind Kane and breaking Eintracht’s club record for goals in the Hinrunde (previously held by Theofanis Gekas).
Manchester City: transfer to the top and immediate impact
On January 23, 2025, Manchester City announced the signing of Marmoush on a 4.5-year contract. The reported transfer fee was around £59 million.
His Premier League debut came on January 25 in a 3:1 victory over Chelsea. On February 15 he scored the first hat-trick of his career - a 4:0 win against Newcastle United.
In the FA Cup he scored the winning goal in the quarter-final against Bournemouth, sending City to their seventh consecutive semi-final. Later in the final he missed a penalty, but the season was still remembered for his most spectacular goal: on May 20 he scored a long-range shot into the top corner (via the post) against Bournemouth, and on May 31 the goal was voted the Premier League Goal of the Season.
In the 2025-26 season he opened his account with a goal in the League Cup against Swansea City, and after returning from the Africa Cup of Nations he scored his first Premier League goal of the season against Wolverhampton and netted a brace in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final against Newcastle.
