Biography of Florian Wirtz

Florian Richard Wirtz is a German attacking midfielder who plays for Liverpool and the Germany national team. He is considered one of the best attacking midfielders of his generation thanks to his technique, football intelligence and influence on the game.

Early years and move to Bayer Leverkusen

Wirtz began playing football in the youth system of Cologne, where he was considered one of the most promising academy players. In January 2020 he moved to Bayer Leverkusen, which caused controversy: Cologne believed the transfer violated informal agreements between the clubs.

On May 18, 2020, Wirtz made his Bundesliga debut at the age of 17 years and 15 days, becoming the youngest player in Bayer's history to appear in the league. On June 6 he scored his first goal - against Bayern Munich - setting a Bundesliga record as the youngest goalscorer (17 years and 34 days at that moment).

Breakthrough and serious injury

In the 2020-21 season he firmly established himself in the starting lineup and became one of the team’s key players. He regularly contributed goals and assists, showing maturity beyond his age. In 2021 he extended his contract until 2026.

In March 2022 Wirtz suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament, which kept him out for almost a year. He returned in January 2023 and gradually regained his form.

Historic 2023-24 season

The 2023-24 season became a defining moment in his career. Under the management of Xabi Alonso, Bayer Leverkusen had a historic campaign, winning an unbeaten domestic double (Bundesliga + German Cup).

On April 14, 2024, Wirtz scored the first hat-trick of his career in a match against Werder Bremen, which secured the club’s first league title in its history.

At the end of the season he was named Bundesliga Player of the Year, recording 18 goals and numerous assists across all competitions.

2024-25 season and transfer to Liverpool

In the 2024-25 season Wirtz made his Champions League debut and immediately made an impact, scoring a brace in his first match of the tournament. He was named man of the match five times during the campaign - more than any other player in that competition.

In the summer of 2025 he joined Liverpool for a fee of around £100-107 million plus bonuses, becoming the most expensive transfer in the club’s history and one of the biggest deals in English football history.

In his debut season in England he quickly began collecting goal contributions - providing assists in the Champions League and scoring his first Premier League goal in December 2025.

Scandals involving Florian Wirtz

Florian Wirtz is generally considered a footballer with a fairly calm reputation and has rarely been involved in serious scandals during his career. Nevertheless, several episodes have attracted media attention.

For example, his move from Bayer to Liverpool in 2025 was accompanied by criticism and debates, as according to media reports the player had previously been close to an agreement with Bayern Munich before changing his decision, which caused dissatisfaction among some club representatives and fans.

There were also discussions about the very high transfer fee (more than £100 million). After a difficult start in England, some experts and fans strongly criticized his performances, calling the transfer too expensive and expecting a greater impact on the team’s results.

In addition, there were occasional emotional moments on the field - for example, a verbal exchange after a match with representatives of Stuttgart that was caught on television, although both sides later stated that the conflict had been resolved. Overall, these situations were more related to sporting tensions and pressure from high expectations rather than serious disciplinary issues.
