A situation where everything can change with a single diagnosis. Victor Wembanyama suffered an injury in the game against Philadelphia, and now his participation in the final stretch of the regular season hangs by a thread.

Sports physician Jesse Morse explained that in such cases the range of scenarios is quite broad — from a simple bruise to more serious injuries.

“Victor Wembanyama sustained a rib contusion on the left side. Rib injuries are painful. There are generally five scenarios: a bruise, cartilage injury, fracture, a combination of fracture and cartilage damage, or even a lung injury.”

In the best-case scenario, all examinations will come back clean, and it will only be a bruise. This would allow Wembanyama to return to the court relatively quickly. But if the diagnosis turns out to be more serious, the timeline will immediately extend beyond the end of the regular season.

San Antonio has only three games left. To meet the 65-game rule (and be eligible for individual awards), Wembanyama needs to appear in at least one of them and play 20+ minutes.

“If it’s something more serious, he will likely miss all three games. Possibly more — it all depends on the diagnosis and severity.”

For a player of his caliber, the issue is not only health but also his season status. The 65-game rule directly affects awards, including potential individual honors. But with rib injuries, rushing back could only make things worse.

The main question right now

Will Wembanyama take the risk for one game, or will the Spurs choose a cautious approach and shut him down until full recovery?
