At the World Summer Universiade hosted by the cities of Germany’s Rhine-Ruhr region, the Uzbekistan national team achieved a genuine sporting breakthrough. For the first time in the country’s history at the student games, the squad captured three gold medals, instantly rewriting the national record for the most top-place finishes at a single tournament.

Golden Surge in Team Taekwondo

The highlight of the competition day was the final of the mixed team taekwondo championship (WT format). The quartet of Diyorakhon Azizova, Madina Mirabzalova, Shohjahon Karimboev and Najmiddin Kosimhojiev delivered flawless performances in every round and ascended to the top step of the podium. The gold they secured became the team’s third of the meet and cemented a new historic achievement.

Bronze Highlights: Taekwondo and Judo

The success of the “golden four” was supported by other combat-sports representatives. The men’s taekwondo team — Shohjahon Ahmedov, Umidjon Turopov and Marat Mawlonov — finished with bronze, adding another coveted trophy to the haul. The tatami masters did not lag behind either: judokas Laziza Haydarova and Shukurjon Aminova ended their campaigns with third-place finishes in their respective weight classes.

Medal Tally and the Significance of the Record

As of 24 July, the Uzbek delegation’s tally stands at 13 medals — three gold, four silver and six bronze. The squad had never previously surpassed two golds at any Universiade, making the current result a powerful benchmark for future generations of student athletes.

Trajectory for Development

The new benchmark underlines not only the strength of the current line-up but also the effectiveness of Uzbekistan’s systematic approach to developing young athletes. Observers already call the Rhine-Ruhr results a launching point for further progress: university programmes, the national federation and the Olympic Committee have gained strong motivation to continue investing in talent capable of making an impact on the global stage.
