Ousmane Dembele - biography
Ousmane Dembele is a French forward/winger for Paris Saint-Germain and the France national team. He went from a breakthrough at Rennes to becoming a player who has won both the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Champions League, and in 2025 he also claimed the Ballon d'Or.
Dembele was born in Vernon (Normandy). He took his first football steps in Evreux - first at ALM Évreux, then at Évreux FC 27. It quickly became clear that he was a player with a rare combination of speed, agility, and the ability to use both feet.
Rennes: rise in one season
In Rennes' reserve team Dembele scored regularly, and in the 2015/16 season he burst into Ligue 1 and in just one year became a national sensation. He scored a hat-trick, consistently produced goal contributions, and at the end of the season received the award for the best young player of Ligue 1.
Borussia Dortmund: a trophy and future star status
In 2016 Dembele moved to Borussia Dortmund. Already in his first season he won the German Cup - scoring in the final. In the same campaign he was one of the team's creative leaders and made the Bundesliga Team of the Season, receiving the Rookie of the Season award.
Barcelona: a mega transfer and years of expectations higher than reality
In the summer of 2017 Barcelona bought Dembele for €105 million plus bonuses - at that time it was one of the biggest transfers in football history. He received the number 11 shirt previously worn by Neymar and arrived as the player expected to fill the attacking gap after the Brazilian's departure.
However, his period in Spain turned out to be controversial. He won trophies with the club (several La Liga titles, Spanish Cups and Super Cups), but constantly fell into a cycle of injuries: recurring muscle problems, long breaks, comebacks, and new setbacks. In certain stretches he produced bright flashes - Champions League goals, powerful comebacks, solo moments - but Barcelona never truly saw a consistently reliable Dembele.
PSG: return home and the best season of his career
In 2023 Dembele returned to France, signing with Paris Saint-Germain for €50.4 million. The first season was spent adapting, and in 2024/25 something many thought impossible happened: Dembele delivered an outstanding campaign and became the key attacking figure of the team.
Season statistics - 33 goals and 15 assists in 49 matches. PSG completed a continental treble, and Dembele collected several major individual awards:
- Ligue 1 Player of the Season
- UEFA Champions League Player of the Season
- Ligue 1 top scorer
- Ballon d'Or 2025
In the Champions League final he provided two assists, and the club won the title with a dominant scoreline.
In 2025/26 he continued adding trophies (including the UEFA Super Cup), but the season was again interrupted by injuries - first a thigh muscle injury, then a calf problem.
France national team
Dembele made his debut for France in 2016. He belongs to the generation that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup. At the 2022 World Cup he was a starting player and reached the final (France finished as runner-up). He also played at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.
In the Euro 2024 qualifiers he scored in France's biggest victory (14:0), and during the tournament he was recognized as the best player of the quarterfinal against Portugal.
Ousmane Dembele - personal life
Dembele is a practicing Muslim. In December 2021 he married a woman of Moroccan origin; the wedding took place in France in traditional Moroccan style. In September 2022 the couple welcomed a daughter.
Within the football community it has been noted that after becoming a father Dembele noticeably "calmed down" in everyday life and became more disciplined. Previously at Barcelona he often appeared among the players with the largest fines for breaking team rules.
In July 2021 a video appeared online in which Dembele and Antoine Griezmann made racist comments toward Japanese technicians in a hotel room. The episode caused significant public backlash.

Ousmane Dembele - scandals
Throughout his career Ousmane Dembele has been involved in several controversies, mainly related to discipline and professional behavior. The most notable conflict occurred in 2017 while he was playing for Borussia Dortmund: the player missed training sessions and stopped contacting the club in an attempt to speed up his transfer to Barcelona.
Later at the Spanish club Dembele was repeatedly criticized for arriving late to training sessions, breaking team rules, and not taking recovery from injuries seriously enough. In 2019 media outlets reported fines imposed by Barcelona for disciplinary violations.
Public attention was also drawn to the 2021 scandal when an old video surfaced online showing Dembele and a teammate making offensive remarks toward hotel workers in Asia. After criticism, the players publicly apologized. Despite these episodes, in recent years his behavior has been considered more stable, especially after moving to Paris Saint-Germain.
